I’ve been thinking for a while that I’d like to do some kind of “Brown Owl’s Guide to Life” blog but then I discovered that book already exists (and it’s chicklit which is of no help whatsoever to people who could actually do with some help from Brown Owl).
It was when someone I followed on Instagram started gathering questions and problems that new leaders were having that I realised that’s what this blog should be! There’s definitely a gap in the market for someone who’s lived this for a long time to help out people who are new to it – and even for people who’ve been in it a while to learn more.
And so I became the Internet’s Brown Owl.
I’m here with a few missions. Number one is to help new leaders with running a unit, so you’ll find stuff ranging from “how do I get started?” to “what’s with the owl names?” to “how do I do my accounts?”.
Number two is general leadership advice. Anyone who’s helping run a unit is using leadership skills but you might not have realised it yet and so I want to talk about some leadership stuff and how you can apply it to other parts of your life and things like that.
Number three is to widen leaders’ field of opportunities. Girlguiding offers so much but it’s not necessarily obvious, especially to newer leaders who are just clinging on to their new role and have no idea about what’s on offer. But also to older leaders – I know there’s so much available that my fellow leaders in my own district just don’t know about, so I’d love for you all to begin to discover what else you can do and have.
Number four is camping and the great outdoors, which is one of my areas of expertise. I’m going to tell you about camp and outdoor activities and campfires and all that good stuff.
And number five, I recently heard Brown Owl types being accused of being “capable and competent and useful sort of people to have around” and I’d like to write more about being that sort of person outside of your Brownie meetings. I haven’t done it yet, but I will!
So that’s kind of the mission statement for this blog. I hope it’s helpful!
